Analysis of historic glass from Slovenia and neighbouring countries by ion- beam methods
jeudi 6 novembre 2025
Glass is frequent find at the archaeological sites of the present Slovenia. Over past decades, we analyzed several glass series, which cover mostly all historical period from prehistory until modern ages. We will first review the known glass sites in Slovenia: prehistoric sites of Novo mesto and other places near Ljubljana, post Roman hill settlements and fortifications, cities like Koper and Ljubljana, and forest glassworks. Principles of the PIXE-PIGE method will be revealed and together with its convenience and deficiencies. Analytical studies will cover prehistoric glass from Slovenia, glass from the post Roman and early medieval settlements like Tonovcov grad, Korinj and Koper, with comparison of neighboring regions like Serbia. Transition between the natron and early plant ash will be shown for Koper, following by the studies of Venetian type glass in Ljubljana, Dubrovnik in Croatia and Lezza in Albania. From the 19th century, we will show a specific case of the Javorniki forest glass production and end with red-stained and uranium glass from the turn of the 19th/20th centuries.
